Visual novels are unique genre of games that invite you to step inside a story and shape its direction through the choices you make. Each decision leads you down different narrative paths, allowing you to explore various outcomes. The level of agency you have can vary from game to game, offering everything from subtle influence to dramatic branching storylines.
For instance, in the last visual novel I played, I took on the role of a widow in 1820s Christiana (now Oslo), running a boutique. The game let me choose whether to collaborate with smugglers or to carve out my own path independently. This ability to immerse yourself in different lives and explore multiple storylines is a real treat for anyone who loves stories.
Yet, I’ve noticed that many book lovers and story enthusiasts aren’t familiar with this genre. The idea of creating a Steam account just to try something new can feel like a hurdle. But once you take that first step, you’ll discover a vast world of interactive stories waiting to be explored.
I hope you’ll join me in experiencing these adventures!
Note: If you want to start with a brief visual novel, and would like to explore the theme of arranged marriages in Turkey, check out the game we published, Arranged. Step into the shoes of Elif and navigate her choices as she considers her future and the traditions around her.
Cheers,
